Cleburne County, AL – Cleburne County Schools has revised its Wireless Communication Devices Policy, originally adopted on May 2, 2022, in preparation for the upcoming school year. The updated policy outlines clear guidelines for student possession and use of electronic devices during school hours.
Under the revised policy, students are permitted to bring wireless communication devices—such as cell phones, tablets, laptops, smart watches, gaming devices, AirPods, and other similar electronics—onto school property. However, these devices must be turned off and stored away from the student’s person, such as in a locker or vehicle, throughout the instructional day. This requirement applies during all school hours, including lunch, class transitions, and any non-instructional periods unless otherwise directed by school rules or staff.
The policy includes exceptions that allow device use under certain conditions. Students may use their devices if such use is documented in an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), 504 Plan, or Individualized Health Plan. Additionally, devices may be used for educational purposes when supervised by school personnel or in the event of a life-threatening emergency.
Cleburne County Schools emphasized that the school district is not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged devices brought to campus. School officials also retain the authority to inspect a device if there is reasonable suspicion that it contains evidence of a policy or Code of Conduct violation. Any such examination must be limited in scope and related to the suspected infraction.
Violations of the updated policy may result in disciplinary measures as defined by the school’s Code of Conduct. The Superintendent or designee has been given authority to implement any additional rules needed to support this policy.
