Flash Floods Claim Life of Young Hero in Cleburne County, AL

Cleburne-Drowning

Cleburne County, AL — Early Sunday morning, the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Department responded to two separate emergency incidents caused by flash flooding across the region. Both incidents involved vehicles that were swept off roadways by rapidly rising water, with one tragically resulting in a fatality.

The first incident occurred shortly before 5:00 a.m. near the intersection of County Roads 10 and 635. A vehicle attempting to cross a flooded section of roadway was overtaken by water. The lone driver was successfully rescued due to the coordinated efforts of emergency responders and a nearby resident who assisted with equipment.

Approximately 90 minutes later, a second emergency was reported from the 3000 block of County Road 41. A vehicle with two occupants was caught in similar conditions. One individual was rescued without injury, but the second occupant, identified as 22-year-old Cohen Turner, was later recovered and pronounced deceased at the scene by Cleburne County Coroner Adam Downs.

Sheriff Jon Daniel expressed condolences and urged caution:
“These events are deeply tragic and highlight just how quickly conditions can become deadly when floodwaters rise. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the young man who lost his life and we ask our community to join us in keeping them in your prayers. No destination is worth the risk of crossing a flooded road.”

The Sheriff’s Department commended the fast action of fire departments, rescue squads, county personnel, and community members, emphasizing the strength of local cooperation during emergencies. The department is also reminding residents to monitor weather alerts, avoid flooded areas, and report hazardous road conditions.

According to the Turkey Heaven Volunteer Fire Department, Turner died after being swept away while helping a friend escape the submerged vehicle. Family members described his actions as heroic, noting that Turner managed to push his friend to safety before being carried off by the current. His uncle, Danny Turner, shared stories of Cohen’s selfless nature, citing past examples of kindness, such as purchasing a heater for a neighbor during winter.

“He didn’t have formal training, but he had the heart,” Danny Turner said. “That speaks volumes about the kind of person he was.”

Turner’s death has also prompted new safety measures. Turkey Heaven VFD Chief Patrick Nolen announced plans to equip volunteers with personal flotation devices and rescue ropes to aid in future water-related emergencies. Nolen described Turner as well-loved within the close-knit community.

Donations to assist with funeral expenses are being accepted at Rainwater Funeral Home in Heflin or through the Turkey Heaven Volunteer Fire Department. Online donations can be made via Cash App ($dturner2013) or Venmo (@Kaylie-Turner-7).

The Sheriff’s Department continues to encourage residents to exercise extreme caution during severe weather events and to never attempt to cross flooded roadways.
