Gentiva Hospice in Anniston Highlights the Power of Compassion During National Volunteer Week

Genriva Hospice

Anniston, AL — April 20–26 is National Volunteer Week, a time to celebrate those who give their time and talents to help others—and a perfect opportunity to spotlight meaningful volunteer opportunities that can change lives. Gentiva Hospice in Anniston is taking this moment to call on local residents to join their team and bring comfort and companionship to those facing end-of-life challenges.

Hospice care is about more than just medical treatment. It’s about human connection, dignity, and making sure no one feels alone in their final stages of life. That’s where volunteers make all the difference.

“We’re here to support our patients and families through the most vulnerable time in their lives, and we truly couldn’t do it without our volunteers,” said Bailey Key, Volunteer Coordinator with Gentiva Hospice. “They are the heart of what we do.”

Currently, Gentiva has eight dedicated volunteers—two who help with administrative tasks and six who sit directly with patients, offering companionship, a listening ear, and genuine human connection.

“I just call my part the fun part,” Key shared. “We’re not there to poke or prod. We’re not there to bathe or assess. We’re just there to talk. So many of our patients just want to be heard—they want someone to talk to about their childhood, their families, their lives.”

Volunteers can contribute in a wide variety of ways, depending on their skills and comfort level. Some volunteers read books to patients. Others help with filing or light computer work in the office. And for those who feel called to patient interaction, visits can take place at home or in nursing facilities.

Key emphasized that scheduling is flexible, allowing volunteers to fit in time as they’re able. “If you can give an hour a week, we’re grateful. If it’s once a month, that’s appreciated too. You don’t have to be on a set schedule—we work with what you can give.”

While many of Gentiva’s volunteers are older and share a generational connection with patients, younger volunteers are also welcome. High school students (under age 18) are limited to administrative work, but once 18, they’re eligible to visit patients. This can also be a great option for college students looking to fulfill volunteer hour requirements—though it’s important to note that all volunteers must complete a background check and training.

“This isn’t the kind of program where a group can just come in for a few hours,” said Key. “Because of the sensitive environment—patients’ homes and nursing facilities—we have to be mindful of safety, privacy, and medication protocols.”

Key encourages anyone interested in learning more to reach out directly. “I’d love to talk with people one-on-one about how they can help,” she said.

Those interested in volunteering can contact Bailey Key directly at 256-283-4981.

Whether it’s offering a smile, a story, or a steady presence, volunteers at Gentiva Hospice are changing lives—one visit, one conversation, one connection at a time.
